Summary

Persistent tightness and a "contracted" feeling in the shoulder following a past dislocation are common signs of protective muscle guarding and joint dysfunction. When a shoulder dislocates, the surrounding ligaments and muscles can remain tense or misaligned long after the initial injury has healed, leading to chronic discomfort and restricted movement.

Most likely causes

  • Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder): Stiffness caused by the thickening of the shoulder capsule tissue.
  • Muscle Guarding: The brain keeps muscles tight to protect a joint it perceives as unstable.
  • Subluxation or Misalignment: Minor joint dysfunction in the shoulder girdle or upper spine stemming from the original trauma.
  • Tendonitis or Scar Tissue: Remnants of inflammation or internal healing from the dislocation event.
