Wellness

Sleep, stress, and daily habits that shape long-term spinal and joint health.

Long-term spinal health isn't built in the treatment room — it's built in the small daily habits that either load your body well or slowly wear it down.

The five levers that matter most

Sleep. 7–9 hours. Side or back sleeping. A pillow that keeps ears aligned over shoulders. Poor sleep amplifies pain perception the next day.

Movement. Aim for 7,000–10,000 steps and 2–3 strength sessions per week. Sitting is the new smoking mostly because we do it in six-hour blocks without breaks.

Hydration. Intervertebral discs are ~80% water. Chronic dehydration reduces disc height and resilience.

Stress. Chronic stress = chronic muscle tension, especially in the traps, jaw, and diaphragm. Two minutes of slow nasal breathing (4 in, 6 out) resets the system.

Nutrition. Adequate protein (0.7–1g per lb of goal bodyweight) supports muscle and connective tissue repair. Omega-3s and vitamin D have modest but real anti-inflammatory effects.

The daily minimum

  • 10 minutes of morning mobility (cat-cow, hip openers, thoracic rotation)
  • 90-second desk resets every 45 minutes
  • One 20-minute walk (bonus: after a meal)
  • 5 minutes of slow breathing before bed

Where periodic chiropractic care fits

For many people, monthly or biweekly maintenance visits keep small restrictions from becoming pain episodes — the same way regular dental cleanings prevent cavities. It's not a substitute for the daily basics, but it's a useful multiplier.

Wellness isn't glamorous. It's showing up for the boring stuff — and it works.
