Fix your desk posture in 90 seconds

A three-step reset you can do without leaving your chair — reviewed by our clinical team.

You don't need a standing desk, a lumbar cushion, or a $700 chair to fix your posture today. You need 90 seconds and three deliberate resets — repeated a few times per hour.

The three-step reset

1. Feet flat, hips back (10 seconds). Slide your hips all the way to the back of the chair. Plant both feet flat on the floor. If your feet dangle, grab a book to rest them on. This anchors your pelvis and takes strain off your lower back.

2. Ribs stacked over hips (30 seconds). Take a slow inhale and lift your ribcage straight up — not forward, not arched. Exhale and let your shoulders drop back and down. Imagine your ribs stacking neatly over your pelvis, like blocks. Hold the feeling for a few breaths.

3. Chin tuck + screen at eye level (50 seconds). Gently draw your chin straight back (not down) — think "double chin." You should feel a stretch in the base of your skull. Now check your monitor: the top third of the screen should sit at eye level. If it doesn't, prop it up on books until it does.

Why it works

"Text neck" and rounded shoulders aren't a moral failing — they're a default your body drifts into when nothing else prompts it upright. Every degree your head tilts forward roughly doubles the load on the small muscles of your upper neck. The reset breaks the drift before it becomes fatigue, and fatigue is what turns into evening headaches and tight traps.

Make it automatic

Set a timer for every 45 minutes. When it goes off, do the 90-second reset. Two weeks in, the ribs-stacked position starts to feel like home — and slumping starts to feel wrong.

Common desk-posture mistakes

  • Perching on the edge of the chair. Kills your lumbar support.
  • Cradling the phone with your shoulder. Use a headset or speaker.
  • Laptop directly on the desk. The screen is too low; add a stand.
  • Crossing your legs for hours. Rotates your pelvis and loads one side of the spine.
